Root Memorial Square

Located adjacent to Houston’s Toyota Center, Root Memorial Square underwent a $1.8 million dollar renovation in 2006. Inspired by New York’s Rucker Park, this historic urban space now gives Houstonians the opportunity to play street basketball amid the magnificent towers of downtown.

Knudson’s design revolved around preserving a number of stately Live Oaks while offering active and passive recreation opportunities. Amenities included in the design are a sunken basketball court with tiered lawn seating, gazebo, water walls and a dedicated public art space. Home of numerous local festivals, Root Memorial Square is also a favorite gathering place for visitors to the nearby Toyota Center and George R. Brown Convention Center.
